Japanese

Japanese tattooing, also known as Irezumi, is a traditional and highly revered art form with a rich history spanning centuries. This style is deeply rooted in Japanese culture and folklore, featuring iconic motifs and a bold, recognisable aesthetic. Irezumi tattoos are known for their large-scale designs, often covering the back, arms, legs, or even the entire body, creating cohesive and flowing compositions.

Traditional Japanese tattoo designs frequently draw inspiration from mythology, nature, and symbolism. Common motifs include:

  • Dragons: Representing strength, wisdom, and protection.
  • Koi Fish: Symbolising perseverance, courage, and success.
  • Tigers: Emblems of power and guardianship.
  • Cherry Blossoms: Evoking beauty, mortality, and the fleeting nature of life.
  • Peonies and Chrysanthemums: Representing wealth, honour, and resilience.
  • Hannya Masks: Depicting a female demon from Noh theatre, symbolising jealousy, passion, or protection.

A defining feature of Japanese tattooing is its strong use of negative space and flowing compositions that harmonise with the body’s natural contours. Backgrounds often include elements like water, wind bars, or clouds, tying the designs together and creating a sense of movement and balance. The colour palette typically combines bold blacks with vibrant hues like red, green, and blue to enhance the striking visual appeal.

Traditional Japanese tattooing is often performed using Tebori, a hand-poking technique involving needles attached to a wooden handle. This method produces a unique texture and richness in the ink. However, many contemporary artists now use machines while still preserving the traditional style and themes.

Japanese tattoos are historically deeply symbolic and often tell a story, reflecting the wearer’s values, beliefs, or life journey. They remain one of the most respected and influential styles in the tattoo world, celebrated for their artistry, history, and cultural significance.
