Welcome to W.P. Tattoo

At W.P. Tattoo in Chiang Mai, we believe every tattoo tells a story. Led by artist New, our studio combines traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques to create meaningful, lasting pieces of art.

About the Artist

At New’s journey as a tattoo artist began in his first year at university, where he encountered a tattooist, whose work sparked his fascination and inspired him to want to begin learning the craft. While studying sculpture, he initially pursued tattooing as a part-time job alongside it. He received extensive guidance on technique, equipment, and hygiene, but much of his skill is self-taught, drawing on his background in art. After graduating, he found himself at a crossroads regarding which career path to choose, but ultimately made the decision to dedicate himself fully to tattooing.

With eight years of tattooing experience—four of them intensely focused on refining his craft—New set his mind to finding an artist he admired to train under. He approached his idol in Chiang Mai, and requested to come into the shop every day to learn and hone his skills. He spent his time there exploring new styles and techniques, as well as developing his own artistry and creative process.

Tattoo Styles

New is proficient and confident in all tattoo styles, including realism, where he thrives on the challenge of creating custom tattoos that resemble photographs in stunning detail. However, one of his favourite style to work with are neo-Thai designs, a style that celebrates his heritage and its culture, as it allows for significant creativity—transforming a single concept or design into numerous variations. Additionally, he enjoys bringing his own perspective to Japanese-style tattoos, incorporating creative line work and blackwork rather than sticking strictly to traditional full-colour designs.

He also works with full colour, having made it a goal for his work to successfully accommodate clients of all skin tones, making it a priority to learn how to adapt coloured inks and techniques to ensure vibrant, clear, and long-lasting results. He provides detailed advice during the design process on how tattoos will heal and appear over time, prioritising these factors in bringing his client’s vision to life. New’s dedication is fortified by his passion to be a life-long learner, which extends to tackling challenging placements. He will not turn down difficult requests, instead taking time to educate himself to facilitate the best results for what the client has in mind.

The Tattoo Studio

At New’s journey as a tattoo artist began in his first year at university, where he encountered a tattooist, whose work sparked his fascination and inspired him to want tNew has owned his studio W.P. Tattoo in Chiang Mai, Thailand, for the past two years, where hygiene and quality of equipment is a top priority. He uses imported, high-quality inks and supplies to ensure that the standards meet U.S. and European standards. Aftercare begins in the process of tattooing, using the best sanitation products and sprays to ensure optimal healing for each piece. Before leaving the shop, it’s important to him that client’s leave with the knowledge and tools to care for their tattoos in the best way possible.

The Tattoo Process

From start to finish, New’s process is deeply collaborative. At first contact, he begins by discussing the reference image and placements, as well as what the client is hoping for with the tattoo. Prior to drawing, he requests a photograph of the intended area so that he is able to design custom tattoos that complement the body’s natural shape, allowing him to work with the placement, rather than forcing a design to fit into a space. Clients are presented with multiple design options, superimposed onto photos of the photograph provided so that they have an exact idea of what their finished tattoo will look like. This allows for the opportunity to make changes, encouraging clients to provide feedback so he can tweak the design until clients are completely satisfied. On appointment day, New prints several stencil sizes, carefully testing them on the skin to ensure the best fit in a stress-free environment. He takes great care with the stencil application and allows clients ample space to make informed decisions, making sure that each client is comfortable before beginning the tattoo.

New’s philosophy is centered on creating a welcoming and collaborative atmosphere. While he speaks Thai, there will always be an English-speaking person in the shop to relay any details and oversee placement, stencil application, and the overall process. However, despite any potential language barriers, he uses humour and warmth to connect with clients and ensure they feel at ease throughout the experience. During tattoo sessions, he balances focus and communication, frequently checking in with clients to accommodate breaks and ensure their comfort.
